An operation instead of eyeglasses

Do you wear eyeglasses or contact lenses to correct short-sightedness or another vision deficiency? Are you perhaps thinking of raising your quality of life by doing without eyeglasses or contact lenses and opting for an eye operation? There are many ways of achieving this goal.

We are happy to give you advice which will take into account your particular visual deficiency, your age, your general requirements and all the findings of a thorough examination. We will gladly offer you a course of treatment tailor-made for you, which will reduce or entirely eliminate your visual deficiency.

Cataract surgery

It may be that the lens of your eye has become opaque in the course of your life, resulting in a cataract. If your eyesight is seriously impaired, then your quality of life can only be improved by a cataract operation with an intraocular lens implant. Our usual procedure is to schedule a cataract operation with an eye-drop anaesthesia and without stitches. If an artificial lens with two focal points is a suitable option then we are happy to make the corresponding multifocal implant.
The great advantage of this course of action is ... freedom from eyeglasses!

Cataract operations are particularly suitable "out-patient" operations; it is a low-risk operation with a high success rate.

Glaucoma surgery

Glaucoma can have various causes, but in all cases there is a progressive deterioration in the visual nerve-ends which presents a serious threat to vision. If eye-drops result in no improvement then a glaucoma operation will be necessary if the visual nerve-ends and thus the visual function are to be preserved. We carry out glaucoma operations with eye-drop anaesthesia and always prefer to operate without stitches whenever possible.

Eye injury?

You are unlucky enough to have had an eye injury which has impaired your eyesight.

This deterioration in your vision may have been caused by changes in the cornea, the iris, the lens, the eyeball, or the retina.

What offer in the first instance is a check-up to see if it is possible to improve the current state of your eyesight. If there are good chances of success then we might, for example, propose a cornea transplant, a replacement iris, plastic surgery on the iris, an intraocular lens implant, a replacement of the vitreous body, or a retinal operation.

Laser treatment

A great range of lasers are used in the field of ophthalmology, and there is an even greater range of applications, including the treatment of secondary cataracts and retinal defects and disorders.

In the case of a secondary cataract, the treatment involves the cutting out of the kind of opaque membrane that sometimes appears after a cataract operation. In the case of glaucoma, laser treatments can serve to reduce intraocular pressure. Retinal defects can be localized, preventing retinal detachment. Lasers are successful in treating retinal disorders such as sometimes appear in connection with diabetes or thrombosis.

Retinal operations

The retina lies on inner side of the eyeball and is the nerve tissue which turns light into sensory impressions. If you are suffering from a detached retina, then an operation is the only way of preventing permanent loss of vision. One operation is often not enough to reaffix and heal the detached retina, which makes subsequent operations necessary, sometimes involving vitreo-retinal surgery.

We can offer you the full range of retinal operation techniques and have long experience in caring for patients suffering from detached retinas.

Corneal surgery

The cornea is the foremost, transparent section of your eye. In the case of corneal illness, the cornea can become opaque, or its geometry can have changed so much as to necessitate a cornea transplantation.

We carry out cornea transplantations with either general or local anaesthesia. The eye remains bandaged for a number of days after the operation and there is a six- to eight-week period of convalescence.
